Abstract
This book aims to provide a comprehensive overview of sustainable fisheries management, emphasizing the vital role of community participation, scientific research and policy development. Drawing from over two decades of hands-on experience in fisheries and aquaculture, the author shares insights into innovative approaches that balance ecological conservation with socio-economic development. With a focus on African aquatic ecosystems, particularly in Zambia, this work highlights successful projects and strategies that have contributed to the preservation of fish biodiversity and the livelihoods of local communities. It underscores the importance of integrating traditional knowledge with scientific expertise to foster participatory management practices that are both effective and inclusive. As the world faces increasing challenges related to climate change, overfishing and habitat degradation, this book advocates for sustainable solutions rooted in community engagement and evidence-based policy-making. It is intended for students, researchers, policymakers and practitioners committed to advancing fisheries sustainability and ecosystem health. By sharing practical experiences, research findings and future directions, this book hopes to inspire continued efforts 4 towards resilient and equitable aquatic resource management across the region and beyond.
